Seeing the “Shining Mountains” reflected in the lake is worth the trip in and of itself. Conrad Mansion: Once home to Kalispell’s founder C.E. Conrad, this immaculate pre-1900 mansion is still full of over 90% of the original family’s furnishings. Go on a guided tour through Victorian elegance and feel as though you have literally stepped back through time.

Flathead Lake’s Six State Parks: Yes, you read that correctly. There are six state parks around Flathead Lake. Have a picnic by the rocky shoreline of Wayfarers. Lie out and get a tan on a beach in Big Arm. Take the boat out in Finley Point. Hike around the glacially carved rocky outcrops of West Shore. Go fishing in Yellow Bay, and do almost all of the above in Whitefish Lake State Park.

Miracle of America Museum (MoAM): The MoAM is one of those rare hidden gems that not only gives you an educational experience, but also a fun zany atmosphere. Steel UFOs and a rocket sit in the courtyard next to vintage cars and signs. Inside you’ll find WWII uniforms and parachutes down the hall from otherworldly beauty parlor machines from the past. You won’t find a place quite like it.

Missoula

A Carousel for Missoula: Local cabinetmaker, Chuck Kaparich, made an oath to the people of Missoula that if they would promise to never take it down, he would build them a carousel. Chuck is a man of his word. With countless volunteers from the community and tireless hours of hard work, he fulfilled his dream and carved one of the most enchanting carousels you’ll ever see. Ride one of the ponies to get up close and truly appreciate the masterful workmanship. Also worth exploring is Dragon’s Hollow, a magical playground adjacent to the carousel.

Fort Missoula Historical Museum: Another attraction made possible by community effort, Fort Missoula is full of fascinating exhibits and historical structures that tell the story of Missoula. Walk the grounds and galleries for a unique learning experience.

National Bison Range: Most scenic drives only showcase beautiful landscapes. The Bison Range offers up close views of the 400 American Bison roaming the prairies. Other wildlife you’re likely to see are elk, pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, coyotes, black bear, and over 200 species of bird. If the driving loop doesn’t do it for you, set out on one of the four walking trails.

University of Montana Campus: Voted the “Most scenic campus in America” by Rolling Stone Magazine, UM’s stunning natural landscape attracts students and visitors from all over. Tour the grounds and buildings, most of which are still around from when the school was founded in 1893. One visit to this place and you’ll come away with the Grizzly spirit!

Downtown Missoula: An afternoon stroll through downtown and you’ll find a dozen well-preserved historical buildings and artifacts, countless uniquely Missoula shops, several art galleries and museums, and a local theatre. You can spend a whole day in downtown alone if you wanted to.
